KARONGI- Rwanda Defence officers who worked in the DR Congo have added their voice to criticise the UN Mapping report that accuses Rwandan troops of having committed genocide.
Col. Goodman Ruzibiza, the Commander of the RDF 201 Brigade which operates in Karongi and Rutsiro districts, told residents last week that he was not surprised by the release of the highly controversial report.
“The UN was here but could not stop the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, until the RPF intervened. We later went to Congo to help Rwandans who had been forced into exile to return home after the defeat of the Genocidal government,” said Ruzibiza.
“I have previously worked with the UN and the reason why I am not surprised by such malicious and biased reports is because it (UN) does not do humanitarian services without side benefits,” he added.
He was addressing hundreds of residents last week, during a consultative meeting to discuss the report.
Ruzibiza blasted the UN for looking on as innocent Tutsis were slaughtered in 1994, adding that it was trying to find a way of covering up for their failures.
Lt Col Emmanuel Kayihura, currently the commander of 15th RDF Battalion, said the UN has no moral authority to criticize those who stopped the genocide.
“The UN is trying to justify its mistakes and this is unacceptable.”
Kayihura added that the authors of the report only wanted to criticize Rwanda because they are not happy with the country’s rapid level of development.
Meanwhile, residents have also condemned the report, saying it is misleading and confusing to the public and meant to divert their attention from what actually
happened in Rwanda and in the DRC.
“The UN is covering up its failures and mistakes but Rwandans are determined to fight any attempts to undermine our efforts to rebuild the country,” one of the residents said.
