RWANDA: Kigali denies theft reports, suspects freed

Rwanda has denied press reports that documents belonging to President Kagame’s personal aide were among items allegedly stolen during his recent five-day state visit to Uganda.
On Friday, media reports indicated that unspecified documents belonging to the Rwandan leader’s personal doctor were stolen over the Christmas holiday at Mweya Safari Lodge.
The Rwandan High Commissioner to Uganda, Maj. Gen. Frank Mugambage, denied the reports in a telephone interview yesterday.
“There was nothing stolen from the President’s party. What happened is that one member of his delegation didn’t notice that one of his colleagues had packed his document. There was nothing that had been stolen,” he said.

Three suspects who had been arrested over the matter were reportedly released after the Police in Kasese failed to find any incriminating evidence after searching their homes on Thursday.
The Police has been tight-lipped about the matter including denying knowledge of any arrests. ‘I don’t have any person from Mweya Safari Lodge. That is your wolokoso (concoction),” Kasese District Police Commander Moses Kafeero, said.

Sources, however, confirmed to Sunday Monitor that the three suspects, all employees of Mweya Safari Lodge in Kasese where Kagame and his family spent the Christmas holiday, were released on police bond on Thursday after being detained for four days.
“They have been instructed to report to the police station every Thursday until the case is disposed of,” a source told Sunday Monitor.
The suspects were arrested by police on Christmas Day.
The alleged theft of the documents ironically come on the back of President Museveni’s visit to Kigali late last year where he is reported to have told his Rwandan counterpart that Uganda is a country full of thieves.
