Sources in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) inform AfroAmerica Network that on Tuesday June 19, 2012, Congolese militias known as Maï-Maï Raia Mutomboki attacked the headquarters of a brigade of a Rwandan rebels organization known as the Democratic Forces of Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR). The brigade, known as the Reserve Brigade, is commanded by Colonel Karume.
Both Maï-Maï Raia Mutomboki and FDLR have been battling in the areas of Walikale and Masisi in North Kivu and Kalehe, Brazza, Chambombo, Bunje, and Mpanama in South Kivu Province.
Mai-Mai Raia Mutomboki have been waging a war against the FDLR and other Maï-Maï groups, including the Maï-Maï Kirikicho and the Maï-Maï Nyatura. They also have, at times, attacked the Congolese FARDC and UN Mission, MONUSCO, Peacekeepers. On May 15, 2012, a mob led by Rai Mutomboki attacked a MONUSCO base and injured 11 peacekeepers.
According to the same and other sources in the area, during the attacks, Raia Mutomboki militias routed the FDLR troops and destroyed the headquarters of the FDLR Reserve Brigade. They seized a lot weapons and communications equipments and almost captured the Brigade Commander, Colonel Kalume. Colonel Kalume and his top military have fled the area, which is know under the control of Raia Mutombiki.
